Sophie-Alexia Joly de Lotbinière

Sophie-Alexia Joly de Lotbinière

Sophie-Alexia Joly de Lotbinière was born in Montreal, Canada and lives and works in New York. She has emerged in the past decade as having established a language of painting that is uniquely her own as it interlaces abstraction with the metaphysical. She is represented internationally and has a solo exhibition titled ‘Stellar Fires’ currently on view at Colector Gallery, Mexico. She exhibits regularly in New York and St Barth’s and by way of Space Gallery New York. She has had five solo international exhibitions and has participated in a number of group shows. She was chosen among several women artists for a solo large private institution commission project that is in the final development stages.

Sophie-Alexia continues to take on large-scale private commission work in conjunction with public exhibitions. Sophie-Alexia Joly de Lotbinière received a combined degree BFA from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University in 2008, and her MA at Sotheby’s Institute in London, UK in 2009.Sophie-Alexia was trained in figurative and portrait painting at the academic painting program withCharles H. Cecil Studios in Florence, Italy from 2003-2005.

Sophie-Alexia’s works deal with the emphasis on its own materiality by breaking from deliberate processes. She emphasizes the use of various materials to reinforce and express concepts relating to esoteric, social and scientific theory. Sophie-Alexia's works integrate immediate elements found within her environment as part of her process. Both foreground and background are integrated into their compositional structures, allowing the works to suspend in their own field of perception. A sense of movement is consistently present in the works as they aim to depict the illusory quality ofthe present moment.
