Sophie-Alexia Joly de Lotbinère

Sophie-Alexia Joly de Lotbinière was born in Montreal, Canada and lives and works in New York. Her new series 'Together' will be exhibited as a Space Gallery St Barth's in New York City, August 10th-16th, 2020.  She participated in a number of group exhibitions since 2013 and has had 3 solo exhibitions both in New York City and Australia. In the Fall of 2018 she was chosen among several women artists for a solo large private institution commission project that is in the final development stages. Sophie-Alexia continues to take on large-scale private commission work in conjunction with public exhibitions. In the spring of 2015 she exhibited with the Greenwich Arts Council as part of an all women’s group show including works by artist Louise Bourgeois, following a solo show with Voce DI New York. Sophie-Alexia Joly de Lotbinière received a combined degree BFA from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University in 2008, and her MA at Sotheby’s Institute in London, UK in 2009. Sophie-Alexia was trained in figurative and portrait painting at the academic painting program with Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence, Italy from 2003-2005.

Sophie-Alexia’s works deal with the emphasis on its own materiality by breaking from deliberate processes. She emphasizes the use of various materials to reinforce and express concepts relating to esoteric, social and scientific theory. Her abstract works play on the conflict between the conscious and unconscious development of form. The works aim to capture both personal and universal concepts and experiences in all their sensorial totality. Sophie-Alexia's works integrate immediate elements found within her environment as part of her process. The works aim to portray a sense of movement within them depicting the illusory quality of the present moment. Both foreground and background are integrated into their compositional structures, allowing the works to suspend in their own field of perception.
